Zlate Hory

Zlaté Hory (Golden Mountains, 1869-1948 Cukmantl, in German: Zuckmantel, in Polish: Złote Góry, in Silesian: Cukmantel or Złote Gůry, in Latin: Cucmantel) is a Silesiantown situatedin thenortheast of the Jeseník District, on the Golden Streamlet (Zlaty potok) near the Czech-Polish border. The local railroad continues to Mikulovice where itpicks upthe track to Jeseník. Zlaté Hory is natural center of the Zlatohorsko micro-region (the Zlaté Hory micro-region).

The main monuments in Zlaté Hory are the Municipal Museum (Městké muzem) andthe Town Hall. In the surroundings of Zlaté Hory we can find ruins of medieval castles thatused to protect the border of the Opava Duchy from the second half of the 13th century. They are Edelštejn, Leuchtenštejn and Koberštejn. The town of Zlaté Hory is home to the Edel sanatorium for children with respiratorydiseases. The beautiful building of this facility nestles in a park with a children’s playground and an ‘open-air’ gym which annually hosts art symposia. Moreover, this is the place with the cleanest air within the Czech Republic.

The town is also known as a former gold mining territory. Today we are reminded of this part of its history in an open-air museum named Zlatorudné mlýny (Gold Ore Mills) and by the organization of a world gold panning championship. The town of Zlaté Hory is also an important pilgrimage site with the church of Virgin Mary, the Helper and with a Calvary. At the top of the hill called Biskupská Kupa (Bishop Hill) (890 m a.s.l.) on the Czech-Polish border there is an outlook tower of the same name (Bishop Hill) which overlook the Zlatohorska vrchovina (the Golden Mountains Highlands) and the Jeseníky range. Facing the top of Příčna Hora (Skew Mountain) is the much sought after ski resort Ski Areál Příčná (formerly Bohemaland) with a piste and a 1350 m long four-seat chairlift.

The municipality of Zlaté Hory also includes the communities of Dolní Údolí, Horní Údolí and Rejvíz, the highest-situated community in the Jeseníky Mountains.  Rejvíz is characterized with distinct architecture, Moss Lake (Mechové jezírko) and discovered Lourdes Cave (Lurdská jeskyně).
